Born from communities, for communities
La Otra Ciudad (LOC) was born in Medellín in 2021 as a youth collective. From the start, LOC has been led by young urbanists, architects and activists passionate about improving the cities we inhabit. Over these 5 years of work, the organization has committed to a practice that centers the knowledge and needs of the most vulnerable populations.
In October 2024 LOC was formally constituted as a non-profit entity. Today it is made up of a team of 13 professionals whose work with institutions, companies and grassroots communities to build greener, fairer and healthier spaces has been recognized nationally and internationally.
Principles that guide our work
Regenerative design
Our design process feeds on continuous learning through feedback, reflection and dialogue. It builds the capacity of people and their environment to relate in healthy ways through co-evolution.
Co-creation
Designing the city is a collective task. We work alongside communities, institutions and researchers in iterative processes to build solutions from the territory.
Systemic well-being
Human health, economic well-being and environmental resilience are interdependent. Solving urban problems urgently requires a holistic view of the context.
Right to the city
Everyone has the right to inhabit, use and transform the city. Urban space must respond to human needs, not to market forces.
