What people ask us
Medellín has a strong international narrative associated with social urbanism. The experience of a few actors (organizations and individuals) has narrowed the circle of who "represents" urbanism in Medellín. In that context, La Otra Ciudad plays an important structural role:
• It diversifies the discourse and the actors included in the urban debate. • It introduces data-driven critique and innovative technologies. • It makes unwanted effects visible from the voice of communities (displacement, real-estate pressure). • It broadens the conversation beyond institutional celebration, thanks to its independence from national funding.
We currently have no open paid positions.
In most cases, when a project requires hiring, the call is open only to the corporation’s associates and our volunteers. If you want to know more about how to become part of LOC, read the next question.
If you are a student or young person interested in urban development, ecology or climate change, and you are looking to take part in an organization with a social and environmental purpose, then La Otra Ciudad has a place for you.

Medellín has a diverse ecosystem of organizations and professionals working in urbanism.
La Otra Ciudad is one of the first organizations in the city with a participatory, youth-led approach. Despite being founded recently, it has already earned national and international recognition. Its expertise across many areas (urban design, ecology, territorial management, public policy analysis, among others) consolidates La Otra Ciudad as a leading organization on this topic in the region.
Other organizations with long trajectories and recognition include urbam EAFIT, Corporación Región, Fundación Oasis Urbano, ArquiUrbano, and others.
Social urbanism is renowned because it managed to demonstrate that urban planning can be a direct tool for reducing inequality, achieving territorial inclusion and symbolically transforming the city — not just a technical exercise in physical planning.
The focus on vulnerable communities and the participatory methodology, which involves stakeholders in every phase of the process, is the most distinctive element of this kind of urbanism.
This is the kind of urbanism La Otra Ciudad practices. Our projects always seek a positive social impact in their context. The active involvement of communities, companies and institutions also characterizes the corporation’s work.
